‘It’s Not Fair’: Khabib Nurmagomedov Reacts to Removal from Frontier Airlines Flight

Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was removed from a Frontier Airlines flight at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas following a dispute over his seating arrangement. The retired mixed martial artist claimed the incident was unfair and possibly discriminatory, igniting conversations online after video footage of the altercation surfaced.

The dispute revolved around Nurmagomedov’s eligibility to sit in an exit-row seat. Airline staff raised concerns about whether he could assist other passengers in an emergency, as is required for passengers seated in such rows. Despite his assurances of being capable and willing to help, he was ultimately escorted off the aircraft.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Nurmagomedov described the interaction with the flight attendant as hostile from the outset. He said he was initially questioned about his proficiency in English during check-in and assured the staff that he could speak and understand the language. However, the flight attendant reportedly dismissed his explanation, insisting that he vacate the exit-row seat.

She was very rude from the very beginning,” Nurmagomedov wrote. “Even though I speak very decent English and agreed to assist, she still insists on removing me from my seat.”

The video, recorded by a fellow passenger, captured the tense exchange between the fighter and airline staff. In the footage, a flight attendant can be heard explaining, “We cannot allow you to sit in the exit row. I’ll go call a supervisor. You can either take a different seat, or we can go ahead and escort you off the plane.”

Nurmagomedov countered, expressing his frustration. “It’s not fair,” he responded, adding, “When I was in check-in, they asked me, ‘Do I know English?’ and I said yes. Then why you guys do this?

A supervisor joined the discussion, offering Nurmagomedov alternative seating or the option to take another flight. When the situation failed to reach a resolution, security personnel were called to escort the retired fighter off the plane.

Frontier Airlines has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident, leaving many questions unanswered about the airline's handling of the situation. Nurmagomedov suggested that racial discrimination may have played a role, though he did not explicitly accuse the airline of such.

Following his removal, Nurmagomedov secured a seat on a different airline and continued his journey. “After 1.5 hours, I boarded another airline and left for my destination,” he wrote.

The 36-year-old athlete, who retired from professional fighting in 2020 with an unbeaten record of 29-0, is widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. A practicing Muslim, Nurmagomedov is known for his strong principles and calm demeanor, both inside and outside the octagon.

The purpose of Nurmagomedov’s trip was to support his teammates at the upcoming UFC 311 event in Los Angeles on January 18. While the seating dispute has overshadowed his travel plans, it has also reignited discussions about airline policies, cultural sensitivities, and the treatment of passengers.

The incident remains under public scrutiny, with fans and followers of the UFC legend expressing support for him online. Frontier Airlines is expected to face pressure to address the matter and clarify the circumstances that led to the removal of one of MMA’s most celebrated figures.
