Justin Baldoni Sues Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds for $400 Million, Alleges Plot to “Destroy” Him

Justin Baldoni sues Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds for $400M, alleging defamation, civil extortion, and sabotage over It Ends With Us.

Actor and filmmaker Justin Baldoni has filed a $400 million lawsuit against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, alleging the Hollywood power couple sought to “destroy” his career by hijacking his film, It Ends With Us. The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of New York, accuses the couple of civil extortion, defamation, and invasion of privacy, marking a significant escalation in an already contentious legal battle.

Allegations Against Lively and Reynolds

In the 179-page complaint, Baldoni asserts that Lively, one of the film’s lead actors, “used her immense power” as a celebrity to take control of the production. Baldoni, who directed and co-starred in the film, alleges that Lively and Reynolds interfered with the movie’s creative direction, with Reynolds rewriting scenes and Lively making “unauthorized changes to the script in secret.”

“Lively wields immense power as one of the world’s best-known celebrities,” the lawsuit states, adding that she aimed to “destroy Plaintiffs’ livelihoods and businesses” when her demands were not met. Baldoni further claims Lively orchestrated a smear campaign, accusing him and his team of “foul and reprehensible sexual misconduct” to shift public attention away from her alleged actions.

Reynolds and Lively’s Defense

Lively’s legal team issued a strongly worded response, labeling Baldoni’s lawsuit “another chapter in the abuser playbook.” A statement provided to CNN said:

“This is an age-old story: A woman speaks up with concrete evidence of sexual harassment and retaliation, and the abuser attempts to turn the tables on the victim. They are trying to shift the narrative to Ms. Lively by falsely claiming that she seized creative control and alienated the cast from Mr. Baldoni.”

Lively’s team added that evidence would demonstrate the cast and crew had negative experiences with Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios. They also noted that Sony, which distributed the film, asked Lively to oversee its final cut due to her expertise.

The History of Legal Disputes

This lawsuit follows a civil rights complaint filed by Lively in December, alleging Baldoni sexually harassed her on set and retaliated when she spoke out. Lively escalated her complaint into a lawsuit earlier this year, presenting hundreds of text messages purportedly showing Baldoni and his team planning to “bury” her.

Baldoni’s suit, however, offers a contrasting narrative. It alleges that Lively and her team “planned and implemented a vile smear campaign” to deflect blame for her “disastrous misjudgments.”

Bryan Freedman, Baldoni’s attorney, stated: “We have an overwhelming amount of untampered evidence that proves Lively, Reynolds, and their team attempted to destroy Baldoni and his team by disseminating grossly edited, unsubstantiated, new, and doctored information to the media.”

Incidents Highlighted in the Lawsuit

The lawsuit details several incidents, including:

  1. A meeting at Lively and Reynolds’ New York penthouse where Reynolds and a “megacelebrity friend” supported Lively’s script changes.
  2. A text message exchange where Baldoni complimented Lively’s revisions, writing, “I really love what you did… You really are a talent across the board.” Lively replied, “We’re in this together… If you win, our movie wins.”
  3. Allegations that Reynolds accused Baldoni of fat-shaming Lively during production, which Baldoni denies, claiming he was preparing for a physically demanding scene.

Impact on Baldoni’s Career

Since Lively’s initial allegations, Baldoni has faced significant professional fallout. He was dropped by his talent agency, WME, and had an award rescinded by a women’s organization. Baldoni’s lawsuit claims Reynolds encouraged WME to sever ties with him, which the agency has denied.

In a previous lawsuit, Baldoni sued The New York Times for $250 million, accusing the publication of colluding with Lively to publish a biased article containing doctored evidence. The newspaper has denied these claims.

It Ends With Us, based on the best-selling book by Colleen Hoover, explores themes of intimate partner violence and earned over $350 million globally. Baldoni’s lawsuit laments that his vision for the film has been overshadowed by the legal disputes, stating: “Heartbreakingly, a film that Baldoni envisioned years ago would honor the survivors of domestic violence by telling their story… has now been overshadowed beyond recognition solely as a result of Lively’s actions and cruelty.”

The ongoing legal battle promises to shed light on the complex dynamics of Hollywood productions and power struggles. Both sides have presented conflicting accounts, with each claiming to possess the evidence necessary to vindicate their version of events. Baldoni is demanding a jury trial to resolve the dispute, while Lively’s legal team has vowed to fight the allegations vigorously.

The lawsuit’s outcome could have significant implications for all parties involved, further polarizing public opinion in a highly publicized feud.
