Texas QB Quinn Ewers Expected to Enter NFL Draft After CFP Loss
Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers has expressed his expectation to enter the 2025 NFL Draft following the team's College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinal loss to Ohio State. Speaking to ESPN's "College GameDay" before the game, Ewers affirmed his intention to play in the NFL next season, although he stopped short of a definitive announcement, saying, "We'll see."
Sources close to Ewers confirmed the “overwhelming likelihood” of his declaration for the draft, a plan that has been in place since the start of the 2023 season. However, injuries during that year led Ewers and his camp to delay his NFL ambitions, emphasizing the need to accumulate at least 25 collegiate starts—a threshold often cited as critical for quarterback development.
Ewers, a fourth-year senior, has had a winding college career. After skipping his senior year of high school at Southlake Carroll in the Dallas area, he began at Ohio State, playing sparingly before transferring to Texas. Over his Longhorns career, Ewers has compiled an impressive 27-9 record, including a 21-5 mark over the past two seasons. Under head coach Steve Sarkisian, he led Texas to consecutive CFP semifinal appearances, cementing his legacy as one of the program's key contributors.
In Friday night’s 28-14 loss to Ohio State, Ewers completed 23 of 39 passes for 283 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He ends the season with 29 touchdown passes, six interceptions over his last five games, and second-team All-SEC honors. Over his college career, he has amassed 8,845 passing yards, 66 touchdowns, and a 65.1% completion rate.
While Ewers is a promising prospect, NFL executives remain divided on his draft stock. One general manager sees him as a potential top-100 pick but acknowledges “wild variance” in scouting evaluations. Another executive projects Ewers outside the top 100 for now but notes that intense workouts and interviews during the draft process could elevate his stock.
Ewers’ time under Sarkisian, who runs a complex pro-style offense and has NFL coaching experience, is expected to work in his favor. His signature wins, including victories over Alabama in 2023 and Michigan this season, further highlight his potential.
Despite rumors of potential transfer opportunities, Ewers dismissed the speculation, saying, “Haven’t even paid attention to it.”
Ewers’ decision is anticipated to become official in the coming weeks as he prepares for the next chapter of his football career.
